Statues

Statues

The turmoil and political controversies in our country lately have me really thinking.  Which people are truly worthy of being immortalized in stone?  What heroic acts constitute a statue being made in someone’s honor?  Some people have made amazing contributions to this world, but no person is truly good except God (Mark 10:18).  The message that is standing out to me in all of this is that, just as statues are being torn down around the country, our sin and corruption can “tear down” our credibility as a witness for Christ.

As Christians we need to avoid building “statues” of ourselves.  Instead of pretending to be more righteous than others, we need to be honest about our weaknesses and sin.  We need the world to see that God has transformed us – that is the miracle!  Not our own accomplishments, but the transforming power of God in our lives.

What “statues” need “torn down” in my life?  Pride? Control? Self-sufficiency?  I want everyone to know that without God’s grace I am a horrible sinner.  I have done so many hurtful things that I regret (some out of ignorance, most out of selfishness).  When people look at my life, I don’t want them to see a statue I’ve put up of fake self-righteousness, but instead I want them to see the wonderful transformation God is working in my heart.
